Closed-loop solutions for thermoplastic wind blade recycling

Pierre Gérard, R&D Engineer, Arkema

Abstract

The ZEBRA project (Zero wastE Blade ReseArch) is a collaborative initiative launched in 2020 to develop the first thermoplastic fully recyclable wind turbine blade. It marks a significant leap forward in the recycling and circular economy for wind turbine blades. This collaborative effort successfully recycled thermoplastic resin and glass fabrics from wind turbine blades and manufacturing wastes, reformulating them back into usable materials. This closed-loop process addresses the growing challenge of end-of-life blade management within the wind energy industry. The ZEBRA project won the JEC Innovation Award 2025 in the “Renewable Energy” category
