Structural life extension and re-certification of offshore wind turbines

Abstract

Offshore Wind industry is heavily focused on increasing operational & commercial efficiencies. In currently landscape, with a growing number of offshore wind farms (OWFs) nearing the end of their original design life, life extension (LTE) has emerged as a viable strategy to maximize asset value and defer costly decommissioning. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for LTE of offshore wind turbines, emphasizing the structural and geotechnical considerations required for re-certification under updated standards including IECRE OD-502 or IEC 61400-22. The approach integrates 'as-is' condition assessments with historical and in-service data to refine design assumptions and evaluate residual life. Key challenges include adapting to evolving acceptance criteria, and design methodologies. Finally, the presentation outlines practical steps to prepare multidisciplinary teams for LTE projects, leveraging transferable expertise from asset life extension conducted during decades on other energy assets. This work aims to support strategic decision-making and ensure continued safe operation of ageing offshore wind infrastructure.
