Closing the loop: mechanical recycling of retired wind turbine blades for high-performance FRP profiles in PV farms

Anurag Bansal Bansal, Head - Strategic Innovations, Acciona

Abstract

CHALLENGE The project tackled two interconnected challenges in renewable energy infrastructure: (a) End-of-Service-Life Wind Turbine Blades (EoSL-WTB): These composite blades are difficult to recycle due to their complex material structure and sheer size, often leading to landfill disposal. (b)Structural Profile Limitations in PV Installations: Existing structural elements for photovoltaic (PV) panels in solar-wind farms are prone to corrosion and have long installation times, reducing long-term efficiency and increasing maintenance. SOLUTION To address these issues, we developed a mechanical recycling process for EoSL-WTBs, reducing them to particulate fillers. These fillers were then incorporated into fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) structural profiles manufactured using pultrusion technology. RESULTS The resulting FRP profiles demonstrated: (a)Improved corrosion resistance, extending the life of PV support structures. (b)Reduced installation time due to lightweight design. (c)Effective valorization of wind blade waste, supporting circularity in renewable systems. This integrated approach not only diverts composite waste from landfills but also enhances the sustainability and resilience of hybrid renewable energy farms.
