CIRCLE4WIN - Circular glass fibre recycling solution for offshore wind turbine blades

Harald van der Mijle Meijer, Senior Consultant Wind Energy Technology, TNO - Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research

Abstract

Project goal: Develop a cost-competitive and scalable circular EoL solution for wind turbine blades based on the CIRCLE4WIN route, i.e.: GF reclamation by thermolysis → GF processing into raw glass feedstock → new recycled GF production → use in new WTBs and/or other GF markets (e.g. automotive). Side note: This project builds on the finding of the Decomblades project aiming to scale-up from lab-scale to industrial demos, optimize processes, and determine the costs and environmental footprint of this recycling route. Expected results: R1 - Estimation of EoL costs, LCA, and socioeconomic benefits of CIRCLE4WIN EoL route R2 - Demo: Smart WTB cutting and pre-processing R3 - Demo: GF reclamation by thermolysis and production of new recycled GF R4 - Guidelines for blade design incorporating recycled materials & DPP //////////////////////////////////////////////// What may be presented at EoLIS 2025 We can provide one or more progress update(s) on the project covering: - Outcomes and lessons learned from first experiments on thermolysis process optimization - First results from cost and GHG emissions modelling of reference scenarios, incl. offshore decommissioning (removal + logistics) and onshore pre-processing. - Preliminary results from LCA - (maybe) Lessons learned from WTB cutting and pre-processing activities (if completed on time) //////////////////////////////////////////////// Additional info Project timeline: Q1 2025 - Q2 2028 Consortium: - TNO (coordinator) - Research on EoL cost modelling, LCA, and socioeconomic impacts of value chain, and Digital Product Passports; Upgrading thermolysis reactor for demo purposes; Compounding of rGF to make injection moulding pellets and access automotive end use markets; . - IX Renewables - Coordination of demo activities and compliance - D&E Groep - Blade cutting & pre-processing - Renewi - End user of pre-processing and thermolysis technologies - Sibelco - Transforming reclaimed GF from thermolysis into into raw glass feedstock for production of new recycled GF - Envalior - Recycled GF production (from Sibelco's input) - Suzlon - Potential end-user of GF produced by Envalior Useful links: https://grow-offshorewind.nl/project/circle4win https://www.tno.nl/en/newsroom/2025/03/project-recycling-wind-turbine-blades/ https://projecten.topsectorenergie.nl/projecten/circular-glass-fibre-recycling-solution-for-offshore-wind-turbine-blades-39112 (about related outcomes from DecomBlades project): https://doi.org/10.1002/pc.70006
