Session description
To meet Net Zero, Europe will need to double Europe's wind energy capacity by 2030. But this cannot be achieved without replacing a part of the existing fleet of turbines, which are coming to the end of their lifetime. Some will see their lifetime extended, which can be an efficient way to save resources and minimise environmental impacts. But adding new capacity through repowering will be essential to reach our carbon neutrality objectives. Repowering, which involves replacing old turbines with more efficient, modern ones, provides an opportunity to boost energy output without expanding the wind farm's physical footprint.
And while the outgoing generation of turbines might actually be re-used in whole or in parts, some will need to be disposed of in an environmentally responsible way, emphasizing the recycling and reuse of materials.
Policymakers and industry representatives will discuss how to ensure that we are able to deliver in a sustainable way.
