PO044: Understanding impacts of wind farm wakes from a wind farm cluster perspective

Jake Badger, Head of Section, Resource Assessment and Meteorology, DTU Wind and Energy Systems

Abstract

By 2050, there are plans to install 260 GW of offshore wind in the North Sea. With such a large amount of wind energy development, what will be the impact on wind resources? Traditionally the perspective on wind farm wakes has been from a single wind farm, either how is it impacted by its own wakes, and how is it impacted by neighbour wind farm wakes. In this presentation we offer a wind farm cluster perspective. Centred on electricity production of complete wind farm clusters, can we make general statements on the following questions: What influence do gaps between large wind farms have in a wind farm cluster? Is there an optimal wind farm separation to enhance wind farm cluster performance? What influence does the shape of large wind farms within a wind farm cluster have? What influence does detailed turbine layout have when wind farms clusters are very large? We address these questions using several modelling approaches, including mesoscale modelling with wind farm parameterisations and engineering wake models. Answers to these questions are important as scenarios for 2050 are developed as we speak, and it is not clear whether such issues are addressed in the creation of these scenarios.
