WindEurope visits ArcelorMittal's plant in Belgium

8 April 2024

How do you make steel from wind? ArcelorMittal are doing it at their huge plant in Ghent, with 16 wind turbines on site. Their top management explain how - and their wider plans - in this 13 minute video. Electric arc furnaces. Direct reduction with hydrogen. They’re going to cut their CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030 and be fully net zero by 2050.

Other steel makers are doing similar things. Like Salzgitter AG. All with the help and support of The European Steel Association (EUROFER).

Wind turbines use lots of steel - in the towers, foundations, hubs and generators. So green steel means even cleaner wind energy. Wind to steel and steel to wind. The circular clean economy!
