{"id":2058,"date":"2018-10-09T15:09:01","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T13:09:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/windeurope.org\/summit2018\/?page_id=2058"},"modified":"2018-10-11T10:54:11","modified_gmt":"2018-10-11T08:54:11","slug":"recharge-agenda","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/windeurope.org\/summit2018\/media-and-press\/recharge-agenda\/","title":{"rendered":"Recharge Agenda"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"inner\">\r\n<p><strong>Global Wind Summit \u2013 seize the opportunity<\/strong><br>\r\n <br>\r\n Last week&rsquo;s Global Wind Summit in Hamburg, by some distance the sector&rsquo;s biggest event of 2018, showed the world an industry confident of its central role in the world&rsquo;s future energy mix \u2013 but one that also knows challenges lie ahead.<br>\r\n <br>\r\n That tone was set on the eve of the event at <em>Recharge<\/em>&rsquo;s own annual invitation-only Thought Leaders Summit, where a top-level delegation of influencers from the wind, solar, storage and wider energy transition sectors <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=17b03b48e3&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">gathered to hear how<\/a> even amid spectacular growth, renewables shouldn&rsquo;t take its future dominance of the global energy sector for granted in the face of protean political opposition, ongoing pressure on costs and unanswered questions about variable production.<br>\r\n <br>\r\n The message was reinforced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=1441c94e46&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">barnstorming opening oration<\/a> by WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson, who warned that wind power would have to &ldquo;fight for every new turbine&rdquo; and show its value in terms of jobs and economic growth if it was to achieve its fullest potential as a power source and global industry.<br>\r\n <br>\r\n Dickson&rsquo;s words reverberated widely on day one in Hamburg, not least in <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=e03e58be25&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">WindEurope&rsquo;s latest market study<\/a>, which outlined one scenario in which wind could install more than 20GW per year from 2030-50 and cover 36% of Europe&rsquo;s power generation by the middle of the century.<br>\r\n <br>\r\n That growth would come against a background of breaking new ground \u2013 the overarching theme of the Global Wind Summit \u2013 in new markets and new sectors such as electric vehicles, with Enercon CEO&nbsp; Hans-Dieter Kettwig telling <em>Recharge <\/em>how wind is <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=aa8c52bd3a&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">perfectly placed to lead the energy transition<\/a>, by undergoing its own transformation \u2013 through sector-coupling \u2013 into a role that is &ldquo;beyond&rdquo; being only a power source.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<hr>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Offshore&rsquo;s fair trade-winds<\/strong><br>\r\n &nbsp;<br>\r\n Offshore, the Global Wind Summit saw yet another capacity milestone for the industry when OEM MHI Vestas announced it would have <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=1e36cb2945&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">a 10MW version of its V164 turbine<\/a> ready for 2021, becoming the first in the industry to deliver a double-digit-rating machine.<br>\r\n <br>\r\n News of the record-setting turbine, revealed first exclusively in <em>Recharge<\/em>, was claimed by MHI Vestas CEO Philippe Kavafyan as &ldquo;important both in production terms and psychologically&rdquo; for an industry that he, like a fast-growing number, sees as a main &ldquo;engine&rdquo; for the energy transition \u2013 and it certainly fits the mood of an offshore wind sector that&rsquo;s on a historic updraft.<br>\r\n <br>\r\n The International Energy Agency (IEA) used the Global Wind Summit to give offshore wind its blessing as a &ldquo;rising global force on the energy landscape&rdquo;, with executive director Fatih Birol <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=be465a9d67&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">telling the event<\/a> that capacity could approach 200GW by 2040, with the potential for plenty more with the right policy framework \u2013 a statement generally heard as portending that offshore wind will get a first serious mention in the IEA&rsquo;s upcoming <em>World Energy Outlook<\/em>.<br>\r\n <br>\r\n Elsewhere on the offshore agenda, tenders and subsidies \u2013 or the lack of them \u2013 loomed large. <em>Recharge <\/em>revealed that Poland <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=d68178ddf3&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">won&rsquo;t be holding<\/a> an offshore wind tender in 2019 and may instead consider direct support, and that Vattenfall expects the next process in the Netherlands to be <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=300b1800ed&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">another zero-subsidy round<\/a>.<br>\r\n <br>\r\n Floating wind was never far from the centre of discussions at the Global Wind Summit, and WindEurope offered a timely warning to European nations and the EU that they must take &ldquo;urgent&rdquo; steps to <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=2d95a6f487&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">cement the continent&rsquo;s first-mover advantage<\/a> in the sector, or see volumes of utility-scale power \u2013 including 16GW off France, <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=f4695b5abb&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">to go by RTE-ratified calculations<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 ebb away.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<hr>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Onshore wind rises to the challenge of change<\/strong><br>\r\n  <br>\r\n  For the onshore sector, the Global Wind Summit reflected the priorities of a market where change is the order of the day.<br>\r\n  <br>\r\n  That&rsquo;s manifesting itself in ever-larger turbines \u2013 such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=bf49ca2532&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">up-to-5.3MW Cypress platform<\/a> unveiled by GE Renewable Energy in Hamburg \u2013 and the role for renewed innovation,&nbsp;a theme picked by Anja-Isabel Dotzenrath, CEO at E.ON Climate &amp; Renewables, who sees sectors such as e-mobility, and heating and cooling,<a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=6fd7c0d230&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\"> as an opportunity to be embraced<\/a>.<br>\r\n  <br>\r\n  Change can be unsettling too, and there was plenty of soul-searching among the German market, which led Europe&rsquo;s onshore wind charge but now faces a policy-induced steep drop in installations that has ominous implications for its supply chain.<br>\r\n  <br>\r\n  The sales chief of Vestas in Germany <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=65985058fc&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">labelled the impending downturn<\/a> a &ldquo;huge hit for the industry&rdquo;, while ministers from five states used the Global Wind Summit to demand <a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=5326f7d99b&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">the federal government acts<\/a> on earlier pledges to auction 4GW of extra onshore capacity to steady the industry in this period of cross-winds.<br>\r\n  <br>\r\n  Finally,&nbsp;GE Renewable Energy proved itself nimble at responding to changing circumstances, as <em>Recharge <\/em>revealed the OEM&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rechargenews.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9ce2040dca4d38f9282025975&#038;id=8d40f85e01&#038;e=a77bbb4425\" target=\"_blank\">has all but replaced<\/a> the 2GW of turbine orders that would have gone to the recently collapsed Wind Catcher project in Oklahoma.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<hr>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Digitalisation the watchword<\/strong><br><br>\r\nDigitalisation was among the key themes of the Global Wind Summit, with senior EU official Patrick Child spelling out why it must be a priority focus area for Europe&rsquo;s wind sector.<br>\r\n Child, deputy director-general at the European Commission&#8217;s Research and Innovation department, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/wind\/1592545\/european-wind-needs-to-invest-in-randd-to-stay-ahead-of-china\">told a WindEurope Conference session<\/a> that digitalisation offers huge potential for cost saving in O&amp;M.<\/p>\r\n<p>That message was heavily underlined by two events that added a dash of competition to the Global Wind Summit.<br>\r\n Online wind farm operations game The Wind Challenge saw 700 competitors from 40 countries <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/wind\/1592572\/wind-challenge-competitors-spur-usd-1bn-life-extension-boost\">harness the power of digitalisation<\/a> to boost the financial performance of a virtual project by a total of \u20ac850m ($998m).<\/p>\r\n<p>Digitalisation was also central to the second Hack the Wind hackathon, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/wind\/1593463\/hack-the-wind-winners-bag-euro-5000-for-digital-innovation-skills\">ran on the sidelines<\/a> of the Global Wind Summit and challenged teams to tackle two tasks over 48 hours.<\/p>\r\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Global Wind Summit \u2013 seize the opportunity Last week&rsquo;s Global Wind Summit in Hamburg, by some distance the sector&rsquo;s biggest event of 2018, showed the world an industry confident of its central role in the world&rsquo;s future energy mix \u2013 but one that also knows challenges lie ahead.
