Market and regulatory overview on decommissioning and recycling in Europe<\/h2>\r\n

SESSION DESCRIPTION<\/h3>\r\n \r\n

As of end of 2020, 34,000 turbines are 15 years or older, representing 36 GW of onshore wind capacity in the continent. Out of the 36 GW, about 9 GW are 20-24 years old and around 1 GW are 25 years or older, hence close to the operating end-of-life. In addition, with WindEurope’s call for a landfill ban on decommissioned wind turbine blades by 2025, this creates a significant market for decommissioning of onshore wind farms over the next decade: setting the right regulatory context in the Member States is therefore of paramount importance to harness such opportunities.\r\n\r\nIn this session we will do a \u201ctour of Europe\u201d to get an overview of the regulatory frameworks concerning decommissioning and recycling, with bottlenecks and best practices. <\/p>\r\n

Maximum collaboration is needed to accelerate the transition towards full circularity within the wind industry. \u200b\r\nIt is essential to redesign the wind industry to become futureproof and reach the circular objectives of the European Green Deal. \u200b\r\nKnowledge must be developed for optimal end-of-life strategies, industrial infrastructure should be developed to handle the large streams of wind turbines and circular policies must be set. In this session we will discuss recyclability improvements within the supply chain, the importance of data for the new value chain and the role of investments in order to scale up. A Moonshot project how to achieve ambitious goals and solve circularity for our future society. \u200b<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Before other solutions reach industrial scale, we\u2019ll have to deal with higher volumes of waste, especially if we implement the landfill ban. As seen from the technologies discussed in Part 1, we can summarise that the issue is not developing the technologies, but rather scaling up these technologies and the steps needed for this. How can we make the most of today\u2019s most \u2018ready\u2019 solutions (e.g., coprocessing), and how can we minimize the flipsides of it? How will these existing commercially available solutions accommodate to the increasing volumes of blades (following the call for a landfill ban of decommissioned blades) and what would be needed to do this in their opinion (including financial support, regulatory\/policy support,\u2026)<\/p>\r\n\r\n
